Greenhouse Glass
You may have built your greenhouse yourself or you may have built it as part of a kit. At first, the frame and how much space it took up were probably your main concerns. Now that that’s complete, greenhouse glass should be your next big concern. It’s not just simply a matter of putting in any old glass that will fit the frame. In order to take advantage and create a successful unit for your plants, you’ll need glass that insulates and protects your plants from the sun by not magnifying rays or allowing UV rays to shine through. So take a moment to consider your options of greenhouse glass.
Before beginning understand that using glass is a bit more costly. Your frame will have to be stronger to support the additional weight and installing the windows will be much more difficult as glass can break easily leading to dangerous situations. However, once finished glass lasts almost indefinitely and is a great choice for your unit.
Just like with your own home you have the option of single or double pane materials. Double pane will provide more insulation, but will block out more sunlight. Regardless of the type used, consider the amount of loads that may burden your windows. This means if you live in an area that has heave loads of snow or hail, you’ll need to ensure that the windows can maintain their integrity with these weights.
Also consider frosted or hammered glass to give your light a bit more diffusion. Low-e style panes are a great choice for greenhouse glass as they’ll cut down on UV rays with minimal light loss.
